Researches performed in our group focus on anaerobic microbial metabolisms of the anoxic zone (monimolimnion) of the unique french meromictic lake (lake Pavin, Auvergne). The postdoc will particularly investigate the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). The ecological factors (temperature, methane concentrations, etc.) that influence AOM will be investigated by microbiological (continuous cultures) and analytical (chromatography, NMR, etc) techniques. Microbial heat production will be monitored by using highly sensitive microcalorimeters enabling the detection of small variation of activity and weakly energetic metabolisms.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in a related field, thus preferably having a solid background in microbial ecology and biochemistry.

Starting date: between September 1st and December 20th, 2010
Tenure: 12 months
Monthly gross salary : 2350 EUR

Description

Host laboratory:
Laboratory of Microorganisms : Genome and Environment, UMR CNRS 6023, University of Clermont-Ferrand 2, 24 avenue des Landais, 63177 Aubiere Cedex, France.

The main field of the laboratory is the study of the taxonomic and functional microbial diversity of various natural and anthropized ecosystems (mainly freshwater environments).

Supervisors:
Prof. Nicole Morel-Desrosiers,
Dr. Anne-Catherine Lehours,
Dr. Gerard Fonty.

Brief description of the team:
The postdoc will be included in the team ?Viruses and Microbial Metabolisms of Aquatic Ecosystems? of the lab. This team is composed of three researchers belonging to CNRS, five researchers belonging to the University, three postdoc and three PhD students. In the general frame of the lab, this team investigates the diversity of microbial communities (virus, fungi, bacteria and archaea, pico-eukaryotes) and their ecological role in freshwater ecosystems.

Research Field

Environmental science – Ecology
